A tidy weekend upgrade with one fatal footnote: he fitted a new PSU on the Friday but didn't change the SATA cable. Modular PSU cables look interchangeable and aren't — the mismatched pinout has blown the board on the hard drive, and the data was needed urgently.

The decode.

This is the classic modular-cable trap and it catches careful people. Connector shells are standardised; the pinouts behind them are not, and manufacturers differ freely between models and generations. Reusing an old modular lead with a new supply can deliver 12V where the drive expects 5V. The board's protection dies first, which is its job, and the platters spinning behind it never learn anything happened.

Assess how far the overvoltage travelled

Scorching on the board told the story at a glance, but the important question was how much further the damage went — overvoltage can reach the preamplifier inside the drive, which is a completely different and far worse case. Testing confirmed the damage stopped at the board, as it usually does.

Compatible board, original ROM, no shortcuts

A matching board was fitted with the original's ROM contents transferred. On modern drives this is the whole difficulty of a board swap: the adaptive parameters in that chip are specific to this drive's heads and platters, and without them a perfectly good board reads nothing but noise.

Image promptly, because the timeline was real

With the urgency the owner had flagged, the drive was imaged as soon as it was alive. The platters proved untouched by the electrical drama and the read completed at full speed with no defect activity worth reporting.

The outcome.

Complete image, complete recovery, urgent timeline met. The old modular cables went in the bin with ceremony, which is where every spare modular cable belongs.

What this case teaches: Modular PSU cables belong to their PSU. Reusing old leads is the cheapest way to buy an expensive lesson.
