Where deleted files really go.

On a hard driveDelete removes the index entry; the clusters holding the data stay put until new writes land on them. Stop writing, and recovery odds stay high.
Shift+Delete & removablesThese skip the Recycle Bin — but on HDDs, cards and most USB sticks the underlying data still survives the same way. The bin was never the safety net; the physics was.

What the lab checks first

  • The overwrite is the enemy, not the delete — Windows writes constantly, and every write may land on your deleted data. Idle time is not safe time.
  • Recycle Bin bypasses are everywhere: Shift+Delete, removable drives, network shares, oversized files. None of them change the physics on an HDD.
  • TRIM is deterministic — once an SSD has erased a block, reads return zeros. That's the drive working as designed, and no tool argues with it.
  • Cloud bins are underrated — OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive keep deletions for around 30 days. It's the first place we ask about.

The divide in one line: on hard drives, deleted data survives until it's overwritten — sometimes for years. On TRIM-enabled SSDs it's typically erased within seconds to minutes of deletion. Same keystroke, opposite outcomes — which is why the first question we ask is what the drive is, not what you deleted.

Can deleted files be recovered?

On a hard drive, usually yes — if you stop writing to it. On a TRIM-enabled SSD, often not once the drive's garbage collection has run, which can be within seconds. The honest answer depends on what's inside the machine.

I used Shift+Delete — is that worse?

It skips the Recycle Bin, but on a hard drive the data itself survives exactly as with a normal delete. The bin was never what preserved it.

Do files deleted from a USB stick go to the Recycle Bin?

No — removable-media deletes are immediate and permanent as far as Windows is concerned. The data often still sits on the flash, though, which is where recovery works.

Why is an SSD different?

Because the drive actively erases deleted blocks to keep itself fast. It's called TRIM, it runs in the background, and it's the one deletion scenario where hours genuinely matter.
