What the lab checks first

  • Most modern sticks are monoliths — no separate memory chip to remove, so recovery means micro-soldering to internal test points, reading the raw flash, and reversing the controller's scrambling in software.
  • Snapped sticks recover surprisingly well — the connector is just the plug; if the flash package or wafer survived the break, the data usually did too. Keep every piece.
  • Fake-capacity sticks obey the same cruel rule as fake SD cards — everything written past the real size never existed. Cheap high-capacity 'bargains' make terrible only-copies.
  • Encrypted sticks mean it — IronKey-class drives are built to be unrecoverable without the password, and some destroy their keys after failed attempts. That's the product working.

Straight answer on reliability: no robust public failure-rate data exists for consumer USB flash — unlike hard drives, nobody runs fleets of them and publishes the numbers. From this bench: physical intake is dominated by snapped connectors, and total failures cluster heavily in unbranded and promotional sticks.

The USB connector snapped off — can the data survive?

Usually yes. The connector is just the plug; your files live in the flash chip further up the board. Even sticks snapped completely in half recover well if the chip or monolith wafer is uncracked.

Windows says the stick is 0 bytes. Empty?

No — that's the controller failing to report, not an empty chip. Direct NAND reads bypass the controller entirely.

Why do cheap sticks fail so often?

Budget sticks use lower-grade flash and controllers, and some are outright fake capacity — a small chip pretending to be a big one until you cross the real limit. Fine for a film, terrible for the only copy of anything.

Is anything on a USB stick unrecoverable?

A physically shattered memory die is the hard stop. Everything short of that — dead controllers, broken boards, corrupted tables — is routine chip-level work.
