What the lab checks first

  • SATAFIRM S11 is a brand, not a fault code you can Google away — it means a Phison controller in ROM mode. The factory tools that 'fix' it rebuild the drive by wiping the map to your files. Recovery means injecting a loader and rebuilding that map instead.
  • Samsung's 990 Pro launch firmware mis-reported drive health so badly that fixed units keep their scars: Samsung's own fix note (13 Feb 2023) confirms SMART values are not restored. A scary health number isn't always a dying drive.
  • SSD data is scrambled per-controller — chips read raw are gibberish until the controller's XOR and layout are reversed, which is why chip-off alone rarely rescues an SSD.
  • Deleted files are different here: TRIM erases them in the background within hours. An SSD deletion is an emergency, not a weekend job.

Manufacturer's own words: Samsung's 990 Pro advisory confirmed the health-drop anomalies 'were found to be caused by issues with the SSD's firmware' and that the February 2023 update stops — but does not reverse — the reported wear. Always check the advisory before condemning a drive.

A laptop firmware update went wrong and the system drive never came back. The drive was brought up in technical mode, its translation tables rebuilt, and ten years of a photographer's edited catalogues recovered intact.

I deleted files from my SSD an hour ago — recoverable?

Maybe, if you power off now. Unlike hard drives, SSDs actively erase deleted data in the background through TRIM. Every powered minute erases more. This is the one case where literally pulling the plug is the right move.

The SSD isn't detected at all. Is that the end?

Rarely. Undetected usually means the controller or firmware, and the NAND chips that actually hold your data are typically fine. Chip-level reads get most of these back.

Are SSDs harder to recover than hard drives?

Different, not hopeless. Mechanical drives fail physically; SSDs fail logically and electronically. The tooling is different, the success rates on non-TRIM cases are comparable.

Do you handle soldered SSDs?

Board-mounted storage is covered under our Mac and laptop services — same chip-level techniques, applied on the machine's own board.
