What survives what.

Platters vs waterThe data surfaces themselves tolerate immersion. The casualties are the board, the head contacts and the connectors — all treatable, all replaceable.
Electronics vs fireThe PCB melts long before the platters care — and it's replaceable, with your drive's unique ROM chip moved across to a donor board.
Salt vs freshFresh water corrodes; salt water attacks. Dissolved chlorides go for the recording layer itself, which is why seawater drives travel wet and sealed, never dried.

What the lab checks first

  • Corrosion starts within hours — water damage is a same-week problem, not a when-convenient one.
  • Powering a wet drive shorts the board and overdrives the head amplifier — the moment a clean-up job becomes a head-swap job.
  • Salt water is a different opponent — chlorides attack the magnetic layer itself, so seawater cases travel wet, sealed and urgently.
  • Fire's order of destruction favours you — board first, platters last. We rebuild the cheap part around the priceless part.

The pattern across every water and fire case we see: the outcome is decided before the drive arrives — by whether it was powered on, and how fast it travelled. The drives that arrive sealed, untested and prompt recover routinely; the ones that were 'just checked quickly' on a wet board are the ones that need donor heads too.

Can data be recovered from a water-damaged drive?

Usually, yes — if it was never powered on wet and it reaches a lab quickly. The platters survive the water; the electronics take the damage, and electronics are replaceable.

Should I put a wet drive in rice?

No. Rice is folklore for sealed electronics — it can't reach the inside, it adds starch and dust, and corrosion spreads happily the whole time it sits there.

Can a hard drive survive a house fire?

Often. The sealed metal chassis shields the platters, and the melted circuit board is replaceable. Heat warping and soot are the real risks — which is why the drive must not be opened, wiped or powered.

Should I dry it out before sending it?

No — counterintuitive but true. Drying crystallises dissolved minerals and salts onto surfaces. Keep water-damaged drives sealed, and salt-water drives wet, until they're on the bench.
