What the sound is telling you.

The click, decodedThe arm sweeps for factory-written servo data, fails to lock on, slams back to its parking ramp — and tries again. That loop is the click.
The beep, decodedOn 2.5" drives a beep is the motor drawing power it can't turn into spin: seized bearings, or heads stuck flat to the glass-smooth platter.
The grind, decodedNothing in a healthy drive touches. Grinding means heads on platters — magnetic surface being scraped away with your files on it.
The margins involvedHeads fly a few nanometres above platters turning at 5,400–7,200rpm. A damaged head doesn't hover — it touches. There is no safe amount of grinding.

What the lab checks first

  • The click is a retry loop — spin up, seek servo, fail, park, repeat. Left running, it repeats until the heads or the platters give out.
  • Beeping externals are usually stiction or a seized motor — heads parked on the platter instead of the ramp after a knock or a fall.
  • Grinding is the one true emergency — it means contact, and contact means surface loss. Seconds matter more than days.
  • Freezing, tapping, percussive maintenance — all folklore, all destructive. The only move that helps is off and still.

Why 'power down' is the whole strategy: read/write heads fly nanometres above the platters. Recovery rates on clicking drives track one variable above everything else — how quickly the drive was switched off after the first click.

Can data be recovered from a clicking hard drive?

Usually, yes. Clicking means the heads can't read — not that the platters are blank. With matched donor heads and careful imaging, most clicking drives give most of their data back. The enemy is continued use, not the click itself.

Does the freezer trick work?

No. It's folklore from a different era of drive. Freezing causes condensation and thermal contraction inside the mechanism, stacking corrosion and new damage on top of the old.

Why is my drive clicking?

The heads sweep for servo data written at the factory, fail to find it, reset to the ramp and retry. Damaged heads, a failing preamp or platter damage all produce the same loop — diagnosis tells them apart.

Can software fix a clicking drive?

No. Software needs working heads even to run — and pointing it at a mechanical fault forces exactly the reads that finish the drive off.
