What the lab checks first

  • Detection has levels — BIOS, Disk Management, Explorer — and each failure level points at a different component. That's the whole diagnostic shortcut.
  • The blown TVS diode is the classic silent-drive story: it dies absorbing a surge so the platters don't have to.
  • Board swaps without the ROM fail — modern drives keep unique adaptive data on a chip that must travel to any donor board.
  • SSDs vanish differently — a dead controller or firmware panic hides intact NAND. Covered in depth on the SSD page.

Bench pattern worth knowing: of the drives that arrive completely undetected, the clear majority fail in electronics or firmware — components around the data, not the data itself. That's why 'my computer can't see it' and 'my files are gone' are very different sentences.

Can you recover data from a drive that won't turn on?

Frequently, yes. Dead electronics are replaceable, and the platters or memory chips behind them usually survive untouched. No-power faults have some of the best outcomes on the bench.

Windows wants to initialise my drive — should I?

No. Initialising writes a fresh signature over the structures that describe your data. Decline, power down, and get it assessed.

Is my data gone if the BIOS can't see the drive?

Almost never on its own. BIOS-invisible means the drive can't introduce itself — electronics or firmware — not that the data was erased.

It died after a power cut. Coincidence?

Probably not. Surges blow the protection diode on the drive's board — which is exactly the sacrifice it's there to make. The board dies; the data usually doesn't.
