Gravity is fast. Damage isn’t always.

The same knock can be trivial or terminal depending on one thing: whether the drive was running. Switched off, drives shrug off surprising abuse; spinning, the heads are flying nanometres above your data with nowhere to go. Either way, the drive gets one chance — and it isn't a test power-up.

Shock, by the numbers.

Running vs switched offManufacturer datasheets tell the story: laptop-class drives rate around 300G of shock running but 650G switched off. The same fall, twice the tolerance — just for being powered down.
Head slapA jolt while spinning bounces the heads onto the platter surface. Each bounce can gouge the magnetic layer — with your files in it.

What the lab checks first

  • The powered/unpowered gap is the whole story — hundreds of G of difference in tolerance, from the same datasheet, for the same drive.
  • Head slap is cumulative — every post-drop power-up bounces damaged heads across the platters again. The first spin should be ours.
  • 'It fell but it's quiet' isn't clearance — misalignment and marginal damage can read fine for days before failing outright.
  • Laptop drives are built for bags, not desks in motion — mobile-class shock ratings exist because laptops fall; desktop 3.5" drives never got that armour.

The datasheet fact that changes behaviour: laptop-class hard drives are typically rated ~300G operating versus ~650G non-operating — and some 3.5" desktop drives as low as ~30G while running. If a machine is about to be moved, the single cheapest data-protection measure in existence is shutting it down first.

  • Power off at the first odd sound and keep it off
  • Keep the drive still and flat
  • Send every piece if anything broke off
  • Say whether it was running when it fell

Don't

  • Power it on 'just to check'
  • Shake, tap or rotate it to free a noise
  • Run recovery software on a post-drop drive
  • Assume silence means it survived — assess it

Can a dropped hard drive be fixed?

The drive itself usually isn't worth fixing — but the data very often is. Head replacement and careful imaging bring back most post-drop drives, provided they aren't repeatedly powered up first.

It was knocked while running — how bad is that?

That's the worst case: operating shock tolerance is a fraction of powered-off tolerance, and the flying heads can strike the platters. Power off now and treat it as urgent.

Is a dropped SSD recoverable?

Usually — solid state has nothing mechanical to crash, so impact failures are cracked boards, connectors or solder joints, all of which are electronic repairs with the NAND intact.

It worked after the drop, then died a week later. Related?

Almost certainly. Marginal head or bearing damage progresses with use — the drop wrote the ending, use just turned the pages.

Whatever's failed, don't power it on again.
