The decode.
Sound reasoning, correct conclusion. A failing external power adapter tends not to die politely — it delivers unregulated or over-voltage output on the way out, and the drive's board absorbs it. The caddy test was genuinely useful diagnostic work: it moved the drive to known-good power and a known-good bridge, and the continued silence proved the fault travelled with the drive rather than living in the enclosure.

On the bench.
Credit the owner's testing, then verify it
The caddy test had already eliminated the enclosure, the bridge and the adapter — genuinely helpful, and it saved diagnostic time. Bench testing confirmed the board was drawing a short and that the damage pattern matched an overvoltage event rather than a component simply failing of old age.
Repair the electronics, preserve the adaptives
The shorted components were addressed and the drive's own ROM data preserved through the work, so the restored board remained matched to this specific drive's mechanism rather than becoming a generic one.

Once powered properly, the drive identified normally and its defect lists were read to configure the imaging pass. The surface was intact, as electrical faults usually leave it, and the image completed without difficulty.
The outcome.
All data recovered and verified. Two adapters and one enclosure were formally acquitted of holding anything worth keeping, and the owner's own diagnostic reasoning was vindicated.
