After the Power Cut, No Drive Detected.
The lights went out mid-evening, and the computer came back emptier than it left: the startup diagnosis suggested no hard drive detected

The decode.
Mains interruptions rarely arrive alone; the spike on restoration does more damage than the outage. A drive's board carries protection components designed to sacrifice themselves in exactly that event, and when they do their job the drive goes completely dark. The encouraging part is what a voltage spike cannot reach: magnetic surfaces are unaffected by the electrical drama playing out in front of them. Undetected after an outage is usually intact data behind broken circuitry.

Confirm the electronics took the hit — and only the electronics
Inspection found the sacrificial protection component destroyed, exactly as designed. Before assuming the platters were fine, the drive was checked for the secondary damage a surge sometimes causes further into the board, because a repair that ignores that produces a drive which works for ten minutes.
Rebuild the board with the drive's own adaptives
A compatible board was fitted with the original's ROM contents transferred across. This step is not optional on any modern drive: the ROM holds calibration data unique to that head stack and those platters, and a donor board without it produces a drive that spins happily and reads nothing but noise.

With the drive alive and identifying correctly, its defect lists were read and used to configure the imaging pass. The surface proved essentially untouched — as expected when the fault is electrical — and the image completed cleanly.
The outcome.
Imaged completely, verified fully, returned on new media. The desktop got a surge protector; the invoice was considerably smaller than the owner had braced himself for.
