More Rattle Than Normal, and No Longer Seen.

The decode.
Drives are precision instruments and new sounds are never decorative. A rattle — as distinct from a click or a beep — suggests something with freedom of movement it wasn't designed to have: a head stack no longer seated correctly, a loose component, or damage to the actuator's limit stops. Testing across two operating systems and a known-good cable had already eliminated everything outside the case, which is exactly the elimination worth doing before sending a drive anywhere.

On the bench.
Find what's actually moving
Opened on the bench, the rattle was traced to the head assembly's mounting rather than to any foreign object — the stack had lost its correct seating, which explained both the noise and the drive's inability to complete initialisation. Platter inspection came before anything else, since a loose head stack is a scoring risk every time it spins.
Correct the mechanism, then map before reading
The assembly was corrected with matched parts and the drive brought up under controlled conditions. A head map confirmed the surfaces had escaped serious damage — the owner's decision to stop trying after the cross-platform tests had kept the running time down.
One complete image, no repeat attempts
With the mechanism stable, imaging ran through in a single session. A drive that has had a loose head stack does not get powered up repeatedly to check progress; it gets read once, carefully, and then retired.
The outcome.
Everything recovered, verified through the owner's own Mac. The rattle was granted no encore, and the drive was replaced by two — one of which lives somewhere else.
