This LaCie had form: the connection has always been quite intermittent, the port playing up for years and always forgiven. Then the character of the problem changed — light on, but a consistent beep, and no appearance on any computer. A repairer had already called it: internal, mechanical.

The decode.

The history was a red herring with excellent timing. A failing USB connector produces dropouts, re-enumeration and corrupted transfers — it does not produce a beep, because it has no way to make the motor try and fail. That steady tone is a spin-up stalling against resistance. The fault had migrated from the connector's domain into the mechanism's, and no amount of cable-wiggling reaches that.

Separate the two faults on the bench

Powered from a monitored supply, the drive showed a classic stalled spin-up — motor current rising, straining, cutting out. The old connector fault was real but entirely separate, and would have been irrelevant even if the mechanism had been healthy, because the drive was going to be read directly rather than through it.

Free the mechanism, then bypass the bridge

The stall was cleared and the drive connected directly at the SATA level, leaving the years-flaky USB bridge out of the picture altogether. This is one of the quiet advantages of lab recovery on an external: the connector that has been tormenting the owner simply stops being part of the story.

Image once, over a connection that can't drop

With rotation restored and a stable direct connection, the drive imaged completely on the first attempt — no re-enumeration, no dropouts, none of the interruptions that had characterised its last few years of life.

The outcome.

Years of files returned intact. The owner finally replaced the drive he'd been forgiving since the port first misbehaved — this time before the replacement earned any forgiveness of its own.

What this case teaches: When a symptom changes species, the diagnosis must too. Old excuses don't cover new sounds.
