  • Attribute 187 is the tell — reported uncorrectable errors climbing is Seagate's most honest pre-failure signal. We treat it as a scheduled emergency.
  • SMR changes the tempo, not the outcome — shingled BarraCudas image slowly by design; the recovery is fine, the coffee consumption is higher.

My Seagate shows 0GB or isn't detected — is it dead?

Usually not physically. This is Seagate's signature firmware fault: the service area that tells the drive what it is has corrupted, while your data sits untouched on the platters. It's repaired at terminal level — and it's one of the more reliably recoverable faults we see.

What was the famous Seagate 7200.11 problem?

A 2009-era firmware bug that left certain BarraCuda models locked busy or reporting zero capacity at power-on — data intact, drive unreachable — with an official fix that initially caused problems of its own. It matters today as a lesson: Seagate firmware faults look like death and mostly aren't, and the fix is terminal work, not the soldering folk-remedies that era spawned.

Are Seagate drives unreliable?

The honest answer is model-by-model, not brand-by-brand. Backblaze's 2024 fleet data put the average across all makes at 1.57% annualised failures, with Seagate fielding both outliers and stars — their 16TB ST16000NM002J logged a single failure all year, a 0.22% rate. Should I check my warranty before sending the drive?
