A Teacher's Resources on a Silent Drive.

The decode.
With cables and ports eliminated, three candidates remain inside the case: the USB bridge that translates between the computer and the drive, the drive's firmware, or the mechanism itself. They sound identical from the outside — nothing appears — but they are three different jobs with three different price tags. Distinguishing them takes bench access, not more cables, and the cheapest of the three is also the most common.

On the bench.
Eliminate the three candidates in cost order
The drive was removed from its enclosure and connected directly, which immediately answered the question: it identified correctly, spun normally and responded to firmware-level queries without complaint. The fault was the bridge board — the cheapest and commonest of the three possibilities, and entirely invisible from outside the case.
Image over a connection that works
With the failed bridge out of the picture, the drive read at full speed with no defect activity of any consequence. The imaging pass was uneventful, which is exactly what a bridge failure should produce — the drive had never been ill, only unreachable.
Move everything to hardware that answers
The volume was rebuilt from the image and written to a new drive with the folder structure preserved exactly, so the teacher could plug it in and find her materials where she left them rather than reorganising years of work.
The outcome.
Everything transferred to a new drive exactly as requested — same folders, working hardware. A term's worth of anxiety resolved by one failed component that had never touched a single file.
