The decode.
An LED proves the enclosure has power. It proves nothing about the drive behind it. Silence where the spin-up whirr should be narrows the field to three: heads settled on the platters, a seized spindle bearing, or board-level electronics that never energise the motor at all. The three are told apart by watching current draw at the bench, not by trying more cables — and the difference between them is the difference between an afternoon's work and a day's.

On the bench.
Watch what the motor actually does
The drive was powered from a monitored bench supply rather than a USB port, which shows what a laptop cannot: the motor attempting to start, drawing its inrush current, and stalling against resistance. That single observation ruled out the board — electronics that never energise draw a completely different signature — and put the case firmly on the mechanical side.
Release the heads, check for what caused it
The head stack had settled onto the platter surface rather than retracting to its ramp, most likely after a power interruption the owner never noticed. The heads were released and the surfaces inspected for contact damage before anything was asked of them, because a head that has been sitting on a platter sometimes leaves evidence.
Spin up once, image completely
With the mechanism free, the drive spun normally and identified correctly. Imaging ran through in a single uninterrupted session — no test mounts, no powering down to check progress, because a drive that has stuck once has demonstrated its willingness to do it again.
The outcome.
Everything came back, unhurried and complete, onto new media. The surfaces showed no contact damage, which is the good ending on a stuck-head case; the old drive kept its dignity and lost its job.
