The decode.
Drives do not enjoy retirement. Lubricant migrates, components settle, and a mechanism that has sat unpowered for years is at its most vulnerable during the first sustained read it's asked for. Failing while being read points firmly at hardware struggling rather than data rotting, and the 'may be corrupt' messages are the operating system reporting symptoms rather than diagnosing a cause.

Stop browsing; start imaging
No further exploration was attempted, because each browse on a drive in this state is a fresh gamble with no upside — anything worth seeing will be visible on the image, in perfect safety. Firmware-level checks first established how much reallocation had already occurred.
Gentle settings, long timeouts, no heroics
A drive that has been dormant for years gets patient treatment: extended timeouts, reduced transfer rates, and controlled rest periods rather than sustained hammering. Most of the surface read normally once it was allowed to proceed at its own pace, with difficulty confined to a band of sectors.
Repair the 'corruption' where it costs nothing
The corruption warnings resolved on the image exactly as expected — filesystem structures frayed where the failing reads had interrupted them, not data destroyed. Those structures were rebuilt from their surviving copies, and the family files reassembled with names and folders intact.
The outcome.
The family files, the work photos and the documents recovered from the image and verified. The drive that spent years lost was formally retired rather than re-lost, with its contents moved somewhere that gets checked.
