An old Samsung external — 2015-vintage, work documents aboard — that will no longer connect to the computer. It performs signs of life, makes a noise / the light flashes, but nothing can read it, leading the owner to the darkest available theory: the internal disc in the hard drive has broken.

The decode.

Owners reach for the worst diagnosis first; the job is to earn a better one honestly rather than agreeing for the sake of a quote. Noise plus lights plus no access has three candidate causes — mechanism, firmware, or bridge — and 'the disc has broken' describes only the grimmest corner of the first. Ageing enclosures are also a known weak point: the bridge electronics tend to fail years before the drive they house, particularly in units of this vintage.

Test the cheapest hypothesis first

Rather than opening anything, the drive was taken out of its enclosure and connected directly. It spun up normally, identified correctly and answered firmware-level queries without hesitation — the noise the owner had been hearing was ordinary operation, amplified by an ageing plastic enclosure and interpreted through worry.

Confirm the platters really are fine

A drive that identifies correctly can still be failing, so the defect lists and reallocation history were checked before any promises were made. Both were unremarkable for a drive of that age, and a sample read across the surfaces returned clean.

Image at full speed, because nothing was wrong with it

The imaging pass was entirely uneventful — full transfer rate, no defect activity, no retries. The bridge board had failed; the drive behind it had never been ill.

The outcome.

The work documents recovered complete, and the owner's broken-disc theory respectfully retired along with the enclosure that had inspired it. The drive itself went back into service in a new caddy.

What this case teaches: Fear writes the first diagnosis; benches write the last. Most 'broken discs' turn out to be broken everything-elses.
