The laptop's own diagnostics delivered a contradiction: the drive passed a SMART check but failed the hard drive test. The owner read it correctly — the machine was fine, only the hard drive is faulty — and a set of specific files on it were the point of the exercise.

The decode.

There is no contradiction, only a difference in what the two tests do. SMART is the drive's own summary of its own health, reported against thresholds the manufacturer sets conservatively — a drive can accumulate real damage well before any attribute trips. The extended test actually reads the surface and reports what it finds. When they disagree, the one that did the reading is the one to believe, and catching a fault at this stage is genuinely fortunate.

Look behind SMART's summary

At firmware level the drive was considerably less healthy than its SMART report suggested: a grown defect list that had been quietly accumulating entries, and pending sectors awaiting reallocation. SMART's thresholds simply hadn't been crossed yet. This is common, and it is exactly why a passing SMART result is worth very little on its own.

Image the whole drive, not just the wanted files

Although the owner needed only specific files, the entire drive was imaged first. Hunting individual files on failing hardware means repeatedly seeking across a degrading surface; imaging sequentially, once, is both faster and far gentler — and it means anything else that turns out to matter later is already safe.

Extract and prove the files open

The requested files were located in the image and opened individually to confirm they were intact rather than merely present. The weak regions found during imaging were mapped against the file table so we could state plainly whether anything the owner cared about had been touched.

The outcome.

Every requested file recovered and verified open — plus a complete image of the rest of the drive, taken while taking it was still straightforward. The laptop went back into service on a replacement drive.

What this case teaches: SMART summarises; surface tests testify. Believe whichever one delivered the bad news.
