I Chipped the Corner Off the SD Card.
A Mother's Day shoot, approx 5 hours of work on it so far

The decode.
An SD card is mostly packaging. Inside sits a monolithic die — controller and memory in one moulded package — with the gold contacts bonded to it by traces that run close to the card's edge. A break beside the contacts frequently severs those traces while leaving the die itself perfectly intact. 'Nothing will read it' describes a broken doorway, not necessarily an empty room, and keeping the fragment let us see exactly where the break had run.

On the bench.
Map the fracture before touching the card
Under magnification, with the retained fragment aligned to the break, the damage was traceable: the fracture had taken part of the contact structure and the traces immediately behind it, but had stopped short of the die itself. That single observation turned an unpromising case into a routine one.
Reach the memory without the broken doorway
Rather than attempting to rebuild fractured contacts, the monolith's internal test points were probed to establish the pinout — every manufacturer arranges these differently and there is no universal map — and a direct connection established to the memory, bypassing the damaged edge entirely.
Reassemble the images from raw memory
The raw dump was then processed properly: error correction applied, page and block ordering resolved, and the filesystem reconstructed on top. Raw NAND contents are not files until that work is done, which is why chip-level recovery is a different trade from plugging a card into a reader.
The outcome.
The shoot and the in-progress Photoshop file recovered complete. Mother's Day was delivered on schedule, on a card that will never work again and never needed to.
