The decode.
The silence was the genuinely good sign: drops that damage mechanisms rarely do it quietly. A drive that spins cleanly and enumerates on the USB bus but presents no volume has almost certainly taken damage above the hardware layer — partition structures disturbed by the interrupted write the drop caused. There's a wrinkle specific to this model: My Passport drives encrypt at the bridge board, so the drive and its enclosure electronics are a matched pair and must be treated as one patient.

On the bench.
Prove the mechanism is sound rather than assuming it
Quiet does not mean undamaged, so the drive was checked properly: spin-up behaviour, head performance across the surfaces, defect and reallocation history. It came back clean, which is the finding that made everything afterwards straightforward.
Image through the bridge, not around it
On a My Passport the encryption key lives on the bridge board, so imaging happened through the drive's own electronics rather than by removing the bare disk. Bypassing the bridge here would have produced a perfect image of unreadable ciphertext.
Repair the partition structures on the copy
The damage proved to be exactly where the symptom pointed: partition structures disturbed at the moment of impact, leaving the drive enumerable but its volume invisible. Rebuilt on the image, the volume mounted with everything present.
The outcome.
Full recovery, every folder present. The whole-unit rule applied throughout — this drive and its board are married, and treating them as one patient is what kept the data readable.
